Who I Am and What I've Done

My name is Alice Dawson, I am a creative, enthusiastic and dedicated foundation level art student. I have a strong interest in fine art, in particularly portraiture. I enjoy portraiture as I believe people are a fascinating subject matter, capable of complex thoughts and emotion, many artists chose to convey these emotions through their work, making their pieces more complex. I am also drawn to works which highlight and bring awareness towards controversial issues and debates. These pieces intrigue me as they have the ability to portray the artists’ political views and opinions, providing the artist with the ability and power to influence the opinion of others and create change.

Through my time studying art at both GCSE and A level I have stumbled across many people (both professional artists and those I know personally) who have provided me with inspiration. Two artists who have influence me strongly are Lucian Freud and Jenny Saville. I strongly admire both their palette and brush strokes. I also respect the work of Vincent van Gogh due to its originality and unique style. His work was not appreciated whilst the artist was alive however this never deterred him and he continued to paint, Van Gogh’s determinism is another inspiration to me.
